Rob Sweeney “The Christmas Show”
Rob has lived and worked on Guernsey now for 25 years and has continually produced artwork inspired by the varied and stunning nature of the island. He recently completed his third “Painting a Day Challenge”, having done so in 1999, 2010 and then in 2020. Some examples from these projects are included in the show and give a flavour of his varied style and technique in watercolour. Originally from Liverpool, Rob studied Illustration at Kingston Polytechnic before taking up his first teaching role near Salisbury. When he moved to Guernsey in 1996 with his young family he began teaching at Les Beaucamps before becoming Head of Art at St Peter Port School in 2001. He has been Head of Art at Les Beaucamps High School since 2009 and continues to share his passion and love of art and the island with his students, many of whom have gone onto successful art related careers. Over the past 25 years Rob has documented and recorded many of Guernsey’s much loved social and historic icons, including the famous Gabriel’s shops that once lined Fountain Street, the old Vazon Bay Café, Number 19 record store, the much loved and missed Woolworths shop and a wealth of other memorable places that still exist like the famous Green Hut in St Martins and the newspaper kiosk at the bus terminus in St Peter Port. Of course some things never change, and other famous landmarks such as Salerie harbour, Vale pond, Port Soif and our beautiful St Peter Port harbour are lovingly recorded here in this show too. Rob’s work is held in collections locally and internationally.
