An exhibition of Photographs by John de Garis (Plus a Spring Mix of paintings by various artists)
John de Garis (1963-)
Introduced to the ‘dark chemistry’ of photography by printing in his father’s homemade darkroom, John progressed quickly to making photographs himself with first works published when he was just thirteen. He then progressed into professional photography which has been his livelihood for the last 40 years.
Recently returned to the island from a five year sabbatical in South Africa, John is showing some remarkable images of Southern Africa alongside more familiar images of Guernsey.
Still using the painstaking techniques learnt from working on film, he embraces getting the image right ‘in camera’ and uses retouching sparingly in his personal work.
We love the strength and simplicity of John’s images and the quality of his world-class black and white prints with their nod to historical chemical processing
