Bryan was born on August 14th 1929 in Guernsey. In 1940, along with some of his fellow students at the Intermediate School, he was evacuated to Oldham in the north of England. Also evacuated at the same time was his cousin Alan Guppy whose foster father Ellis Shaw was a well-known artist and a good friend of L.S.Lowry. It was in this environment that Bryan learned his basic drawing and water colour skills. On his return to Guernsey in 1946 he joined the family fish business as a professional fisherman; which career he maintained until his retirement in 1994. However, throughout those years his interest in watercolour painting never diminished and at the first opportunity he recommenced the painting of ships, sea and later portraits.
