1933 – 2014
John Brunsdon is one of Britain’s most distinguished printmakers. All his work was individually hand etched, inked, coloured and printed in his studio in Suffolk.
After Cheltenham Grammar School and with encouragement from his art master, Brunsdon enrolled at the Cheltenham School of Art in 1949 where he studied until 1953. He started etching under the guidance Stanley Dent, an etcher taught by Robert Austin at the Royal College of Art. When Brunsdon enrolled at the Royal College of Art in 1955 he met Julian Trevelyan who influenced him in discovering colour etching and aquatint.
Artists had, in the main, produced black and white etchings which were hand water-coloured if so desired. Brunsdon adopted Trevelyan’s approach to inking his etched plates with separate colours. Each colour applied to the appropriate area with a small piece of muslin. The image was printed and the process repeated for the next print. He took delight in the texture and decorative qualities of etched marks and the sweeping shapes of broad colour which fuse into timeless images. He was interested in man’s influence upon the landscape, the contrast between architecture and the countryside and the way in which man has sculpted the surface of the earth for his use.
His characteristic style reflected his acute understanding of the etching process. Meticulous craftsmanship was his hallmark.
His work is featured in numerous private and public collections worldwide including those of The Tate Gallery, Arts Council of Great Britain, Scottish Museum of Modern Art and MOMA, New York.
In 2007 Bohun Gallery commissioned John Brunsdon to produce a series of limited edition etchings of the local area.
