Johan was born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) but grew up in the RSA. From a young age he enjoyed making drawings but never took art seriously or considered any art career. Instead he followed a career in building and facility management but found it unfulfilling. In 2010 he decided to take a leap of faith and practice art full time.
With no formal art education or experience, the beginning years were difficult but there was no turning back. He gained knowledge and experience of painting from art courses, workshops, books, videos and making lots of mistakes.
Johan paints what is close to his heart, which is landscapes, still lifes and portraits. He enjoys working “plein air” whenever possible, however, most of the work is done in his studio, working from photos and other reference material gathered on location.
Before starting a painting he tries to determine what is significant in the subject and make that the focus of his painting. What needs to be said, Johan will then try to say with as few brush strokes as possible. What gives him satisfaction and makes him return to the easel is knowing that there are viewers that enjoy his work.
Johan currently works from his home studio in Centurion, South Africa.
